Beat the Scammers
How this actually happens, and how to stop it. The four warning signs every scam has in common. The calls and emails going around Williamson County right now. And what to do if it has already happened to someone in your family.

The old advice is no longer enough.
For years the rule was simple: if the voice on the telephone sounds like your grandson, it is your grandson. That rule stopped being true. A computer can now copy a voice from a few seconds of audio — a birthday video, a voicemail, a clip from Facebook.
This workshop is not about being frightened of the telephone. It is about knowing exactly what to do in the ninety seconds when it matters.
What you will learn
Three things worth knowing before the telephone rings.
The four warning signs
Every scam has them, whatever form it arrives in. Once you can name the four, you stop needing to recognize each new trick as it appears.
What voice cloning really is
A computer can copy a voice from a few seconds of sound. We show you how it works, and the family safe word that defeats it in two minutes at the kitchen table.
If it has already happened
Who to call, in what order, and what can still be undone. Being scammed was never a failure of intelligence, and we say so plainly.
The whole of it
Eight things, in a sensible order.
1. Welcome — and why this isn't your fault
2. The four warning signs

This season
Why December Is Their Best Month
Two mornings, both at Cedar Park Parks & Recreation, 550 Discovery Blvd:
Friday, October 23 and Friday, November 13, 9:00 to 10:00am. Free to attend, and both cover the same ground — come to whichever is easier.
Bring a friend if you would rather not come alone. You are very welcome in twos.
Cedar Park too far, or neither morning any good? Tell us where you are and we will write when there is one closer.
Your name, email and town. We will only write when there is a date.
Ten scams, one safe word, one page.
You leave with the ten scams going around right now — in large print, yours to keep and pass on — and a family safe word agreed before you go home. It can be done the same evening at the kitchen table.
Free to attend, and there is no pitch from the front of the room. If you run an HOA, library, senior center or church group, we will bring the whole thing to your people at no charge — ask us to come to you. Or ask us a question any time.
